Key Facts

  • The vaccination program runs from October to February eacy year
  • This year´s flu vaccination will provide protection against Swine Flu.
  • A flu vaccination contains inactivated, killed virus strains so it can´t give you flu, however, a flu vaccination can take up to 2 weeks to begin working so it is possible to catch flu in this period.
  • If you are 65 and over, pregnant or are suffering from a condition which puts you at risk, you will be able to receive a Flu Vaccination free of charge from your GP. Every year, each GP surgery draws up a list of eligible patients and invites them to attend the surgery for a free of charge Flu Vaccination.

  • You must not have had a seasonal flu vaccination in the last 6 months
  • You are not pregrant or do not think you may be pregnant (if pregnant contact your GP)

How will the Flu Vaccination be administered

When you arrive you will be asked to complete a consent form which will ask you to provide some information about yourself.

You will then be taken to a specially prepared consultation room, where the Pharmacist will ask you a series of questions (including any allergies which you may have) in order to ensure that you can have the Flu Vaccination. >
The Pharmacist will then select the type of Vaccine which will be most suitable based on your answers. If you do have any allergies, you will still be able to have a Flu Vaccination, however, you will not be suitable for certain types of vaccine.

The Pharmacist will then inject you with the Flu Vaccine using a pre-filled syringe. A small spot plaster will then be placed over the Vaccination area. Following the vaccination, you will be asked to wait in the waiting area, where a member of staff will observe you for 10 minutes. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire. After 10 minutes if you have not had any feeling of faintness or dizziness you will be able to leave.
